Newscom 9/21/2006:  Alarm Sounded: The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is now warning about the dangers of all-terrain vehicles.
The number of ATVs in use in the United States has increased from 2 million to more than 6.9 million in the past decade. From 1982 through 2004, there were nearly 6,500 deaths involving ATVs. In 2004, an estimated 136,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries -- many life-altering. In 2003, an estimated 740 people died nationwide in ATV incidents. About 30 percent of all deaths and injuries involve children younger than 16.

CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord said Thursday, ATVs are not toys, especially adult ATVs, which can travel at 60 miles per hour and weigh up to 800 pounds. There have been too many children killed while driving or riding as a passenger on adult ATVs. The safety commission wants to make the current voluntary safety standards mandatory for the ATV industry. It also wants regulations that would ban three wheeled ATVs, and set up three youth size ATV categories. In Washington state ATVs must be licensed by the owner, but there is no age requirement for riders. The vehicles are not allowed on public roads. Copyright 2006 by UPI.

ATV Injuries Continue to Rise: The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 35 witnesses have registered to testify about all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety at the commission's regional public hearings to be held on June 5, 2003. Estimated ATV-related injuries in the U.S. have doubled in a recent 5-year period and deaths also continue to climb. The witnesses include doctors, researchers, ATV dealers, riders, advocates and families of victims from ATV-related crashes. "The diversity of views is exactly what we want to hear at the ATV safety hearing," said CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton. "We are concerned about the disproportionate increase in the number of deaths and injuries associated with ATV use in recent years, and we hope the hearing will help us understand the causes of these deaths and injuries." ATV injuries requiring an emergency room visit increased by 104 percent from an estimated 54,700 in 1997 to 111,700 in 2001. In 2001, about a third of these victims were under 16 years old. In this same period the estimated number of ATV drivers increased 36 percent, driving hours grew 50 percent and the number of ATVs increased 40 percent, according to a recent commission analysis. For 1999, the last year for which death records are substantially complete, the commission has reports of 357 people who died as a result of ATV use, up from 251 in 1998 and 241 in 1997.

"Limiting maximum speed is the most critical safety factor for youth ATV models," the commission staff...
