Recall of Peanut Products - Expands to Texas
|
An Inspector with the State of Texas Department of State Health Services also found that the unit's air handling system was pulling debris from the infested crawl space into production areas. State of Texas records indicate that the peanut plant began operating in March 2005 but was shut down February 2009. The State Health Department has also issued an Order that also requires the Plant to stop producing and distributing food products.
The Salmonella Scare involving peanut products continues to expand and may have far-reaching consequences when it comes to food safety. United States Health Officials have informed the United States Congress that the outbreak is going to change the way the government oversees the safety of peanut butter and other foods. The FDA told lawmakers that agency inspectors will now start to routinely collect samples for bacterial testing whenever they go into a facility. Currently that's done only if officials suspect a problem.
The current salmonella outbreak has sickened some 600 people and is being linked to nine deaths. More than 1,900 products have been recalled.
