Procrit Drug Warning
Procrit, Aranesp & Epogen - FDA Drug Warning
On Friday, March 9, 2007 the FDA issued a new drug warning on Procrit, Epogen, Aranesp or Eprex, also known as Procrit also known as Epoetin Alfa. The drugs Procrit, Epogen, Aranesp or Eprex, also known as Procrit or Epoetin Alfa, are used to treat anemia. Aranesp, Epogen, Eprex or Procrit have the same biological effects as erythropoietin. Erythropoientin is a naturally occurring protein that stimulates bone marrow. Bone Marrow is key to the production of red blood cells. If the body does not produce enough erythropoietin, severe anemia can occur. These drugs have been widely if not over prescribed for dialysis and cancer patients. These patients can have a low red blood cell count. The drug is prescribed in an attempt to combat the problem of anemia. However it may have been also wrongly prescribed to those not suffering from Anemia, but who were merely tired or fatigued.
The FDA, released a warning on March 9, 2007 on these drugs. It is being reported that Aranesp, Epogen and Procrit may have severe side effects that include, blood clots and in some cases death. These drugs may also induce flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, fever, headaches, joint and muscle, and weakness. Skin rashes and increased may also occur. But the main news from the FDA is that if Procrit, Aranasp and/or Epogen when not used appropriately may have dangerous medical side effects that include: Blood Clots and in some cases Death and may stimulate Cancer.
These drugs were originally designed to help patients lower their need for blood transfusions or the effects or Anemia.
The March 9, 2007 Alert from the FDA follows, the United Kingdom's Medicines Control Agency announcement of problems. Several clinical trials of Procrit were halted in November and December of 2003 after researchers discovered a higher-than-expected number of blood clots among patients using the medication. The Alert from the FDA is important and if you or a family member is experiencing health problems or if you have medical questions or concerns see you doctor.
