Stolen Camaro Causes Crash That Kills 4, Injures 21 on the Southwest Side

According to a KSAT News report, 4 people are dead and 21 were injured following a devastating accident on I-35 last Thursday.¹

Police reported the accident happened at around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 17th, on I-35 South near Cassin, close to the I-35 to Loop 410 interchange on the Southwest Side. A stolen Camaro was speeding down I-35 southbound when it collided with a small passenger bus towing a trailer. The impact sent the bus crashing into a guardrail, where it was then struck by an 18-wheeler. The second impact caused the bus to roll on its passenger side, ejecting several passengers.

Two elderly passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others who were hospitalized at University Hospital died of their injuries at the hospital. Their names and ages were not released. SAFD reported a total of 21 people injured–8 suffered life-threatening injuries, 13 suffered minor injuries–with ages ranging from young children to senior adults.

An unconfirmed number of suspects fled from the stolen Camaro. One was reported armed with a rifle. The investigation is ongoing.

Can You File a Personal Injury Claim After a Crash Involving a Stolen Vehicle?

A stolen vehicle. A high-speed collision. A horrific chain reaction that killed four and injured 21 more on the Southwest Side of San Antonio.

When a tragedy like this occurs, victims and their families are left grieving and confused. Beyond the heartbreak and physical recovery, they face a difficult question:

Who pays for the damages when a crash is caused by a stolen car?

If the at-fault driver is uninsured or cannot be located—as in this case with fleeing suspects—victims still have potential options for compensation:

1. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage

If you were injured as a driver or passenger and you (or the driver of your vehicle) have UM/UIM coverage, your policy may help cover:

  • Medical expenses

  • Lost income

  • Pain and suffering

  • Funeral costs (in wrongful death cases)

UM/UIM coverage is optional in Texas—but insurance companies are required to offer it. Many Texans carry it without realizing it.

2. Liability of Other Parties Involved

While the suspects in the stolen vehicle may have triggered the crash, they aren’t always the only ones who could be held accountable. In multi-vehicle collisions, the actions of other drivers or involved parties can significantly impact the outcome—and the law allows for more than one party to share liability.

For example:

  • Other drivers may be partially responsible if they were speeding, distracted, or failed to take reasonable steps to avoid the collision.

  • Commercial vehicle operators—such as bus or truck drivers—could be liable if they were improperly trained, overloaded, or operating with unsafe equipment.

  • Employers or transportation companies might be accountable if the vehicle was part of a business operation and safety protocols weren’t followed.

If any of these factors contributed to the severity of the crash or the resulting injuries, those parties may be held partially liable under Texas personal injury law.
