Two North East ISD School Buses Collide on U.S. 281

School bus accidents are rare but can have devastating consequences.

Two North Side ISD Buses Transporting Over 60 Students Collide on U.S. 281

According to a News4SanAntonio report, two school buses collided while transporting students on U.S. 281.¹

The accident happened around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, August 19th, on U.S. 281 near the Redland Road and Sonterra Blvd exit. The buses, both from Tejada Middle School, were carrying 26 students on one bus and 40 on the other.

Police have not released the cause of the crash. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, multiple lanes of U.S. 281 were shut down, and dozens of students waited along the highway for alternative transportation. No further details have been shared at this time.

Did You Know?

Even though there has been a small uptick in school-bus-related fatalities, school buses remain the safest mode of transportation for children, according to national safety data.²

Back-to-School Safety Reminders for Texas Drivers

Although this accident did not result in injuries, it is an important reminder that the back-to-school season means more buses are on the road. Drivers need to take extra care during pickup and drop-off times.

  • Slow down in school zones. Children can appear suddenly, and fines for speeding are steep.

  • Stop for school buses. Passing a stopped bus with flashing red lights is illegal and puts kids at serious risk.

  • Plan ahead. Morning and afternoon traffic is always heavier when school starts. A little patience prevents crashes.

  • Stay alert near neighborhoods and highways. Buses make frequent stops and wide turns, from U.S. 281 to local side streets.

What if Your Child Is Hurt in a Bus Accident?

School buses are safe, but accidents can still happen. If a child is injured, parents often face tough questions about what comes next.

  • Cause matters. Sometimes it’s driver error, but other times, mechanical failure, poor road conditions, or another driver may be to blame.

  • Special rules apply. Because schools are government entities, claims may fall under sovereign immunity laws, which carry strict deadlines.

  • Legal help can guide families. An attorney can investigate the cause, determine liability, and pursue the compensation a child may be entitled to.

While the NEISD crash ended without injury, it serves as a reminder that families should know their rights and options in case of future accidents.
