Woman Recovering After Pit Bull Attack on the South Side
According to a report from News4SanAntonio, a woman is recovering in the hospital after a violent dog attack on the South Side.¹
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident happened at around 10 a.m. Friday, April 24th, near the 1700 block of Martinez Losoya Road.
A 49-year-old woman was attacked by a pit bull, suffering multiple injuries to the left side of her body and significant blood loss. Witnesses told deputies the woman was dragged by the dog during the attack.
She was transported to University Hospital, where she stabilized.
Authorities say the dog’s owner left the scene with the animal and initially claimed it had been shot. Investigators later determined that was not true. The owner was issued multiple citations, including dogs running free of restraint, failure to vaccinate for rabies, and a dangerous dog attack causing bodily injury.
Animal Care Services took custody of the dog for a mandatory 10-day quarantine. The investigation is ongoing.

Legal Options After a Pit Bull Attack in San Antonio
A dog attack can turn serious in seconds. When injuries involve deep wounds, blood loss, or being knocked to the ground, recovery is often painful, expensive, and time-consuming.
For victims and their families, the focus quickly shifts to two questions: How did this happen—and who is responsible?
Why Some Dog Attacks Cause More Severe Injuries
Any dog can bite. But certain attacks, especially those involving strong, muscular breeds like pit bulls, often result in more severe injuries when the dog bites with force and does not release.
These attacks often involve:
- Deep puncture wounds
- Tearing of skin and muscle
- Significant blood loss
- Nerve damage or long-term impairment
In many reported cases, the severity comes from the duration and intensity of the attack, not just the initial bite. When a dog continues biting or pulls at a victim, injuries can escalate quickly.
These types of injuries often require emergency treatment, surgery, and ongoing care. In severe cases, victims are left with permanent scarring or disfigurement.
Owner Responsibility in Texas
Dog owners in San Antonio are legally responsible for controlling their animals.
That includes:
- Keeping dogs properly secured
- Preventing them from roaming freely
- Following vaccination and safety requirements
When an owner fails to take these basic precautions, and someone is injured as a result, that can establish liability.
Evidence of negligence often includes:
- The dog escaping from a yard or enclosure
- Lack of restraint in public or residential areas
- Failure to follow local animal control laws
- Prior signs of aggressive behavior
What Legal Options Are Available
Victims of a serious dog attack have the right to pursue a personal injury claim when negligence is involved.
These claims are designed to recover the full impact of the attack, including:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Hospital care and follow-up treatment
- Pain and emotional distress
- Lost wages during recovery
The strength of a claim depends on the facts of the incident and the evidence gathered.

Why Reporting the Attack Matters
Reporting a dog attack to Animal Care Services is not optional—it plays a critical role in protecting the community.
It allows officials to:
- Investigate the incident
- Evaluate the dog’s behavior
- Enforce quarantine requirements
- Prevent future attacks
Official reports also become key evidence if a legal claim is filed.
