According to a KSAT News report, a man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after hitting a garbage truck last week.

Police reported the incident occurred at around 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5th, on the 9700 block of Perrin Beitel on the Northeast Side. The motorcycle was apparently coming up on the intersection of Perrin Beitel and Clear Spring when a garbage truck entered his view. He was unable to stop and crashed underneath the garbage truck. Roughly 25% of those injured and killed in garbage truck accidents are the sanitation workers themselves.

Hit by a Garbage Truck in San Antonio? Here’s What to Do.

Even though we hardly ever think about it, garbage trucks are a big part of our lives. The massive trucks loaded down with garbage come into our neighborhoods at least twice a week and can pose a serious threat to pedestrians and other motorists. This is especially true in areas where garbage collection happens in the dark early-morning hours.

Let’s take a look at what to do if you’re in a garbage truck accident in San Antonio.

What to Do If You’re Hit by a Garbage Truck:

Whether as a motorcyclist, pedestrian, or passenger vehicle, follow these steps if you’re hit by a garbage truck:

  • Check for Injuries — Check yourself, your passengers, and anyone involved for injuries.
  • Call 9-1-1 — If anyone is injured call 9-1-1 immediately. Even if no one is hurt, you’ll want an accident report for insurance claims later on.
  • Document the Scene — If you’re able to, document the scene by taking photos and/or video. You should also look around to see if any street cameras or doorbell cameras may have caught your accident.
  • Gather Information — Get the insurance info, plate number, name, address, and phone number of the garbage truck and driver.
  • Talk to Witnesses — Get the name and phone number of anyone who may have witnessed the accident.
  • Get Evaluated by a Medical Professional — Even if you don’t feel injured, get checked out by a doctor anyway ASAP. Some life-threatening injuries show themselves later, especially head injuries.
  • Report the Accident to Your Insurance — Contact your insurance and report the accident as soon as it is convenient.
  • Call a Commercial Vehicle Accident Attorney

You may be entitled to compensation for injuries in a garbage truck accident in San Antonio.

You Need an Attorney for a Garbage Truck Accident in San Antonio: Here’s Why.

Did you know that garbage trucks are considered commercial vehicles?

Commercial vehicle accidents are not like normal accidents, which can often be handled without an attorney (unless a death or serious injury is involved). Commercial vehicle accidents involve more complicated liability and special laws that don’t apply to normal drivers.

Plus, big companies have teams dedicated to protecting them from liability, even if their drivers do something wrong. When you’re hit by a garbage truck, you start at the bottom.
