VIAtrans Van, SAPD Vehicle, and UPS Truck Involved in Crash That Hospitalized 3

Multi-vehicle accidents often happen at intersections.

3 Injured, Including 2 SAPD Officers, After Multi-Vehicle Crash Near Medical Center

According to a News4SanAntonio report, three people—including two SAPD officers—were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash near the Medical Center Tuesday evening.¹

Police say the accident happened around 5:21 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10th, at the intersection of Warzbach Road and Ewing Halsell. Another news source reported that the driver of a sedan may have been experiencing a medical episode when they approached the intersection and crashed into a pickup truck.²

The impact reportedly caused the sedan to jump a sidewalk and strike a VIAtrans van. The vehicle then continued southbound before colliding with a patrol unit. The van was also pushed into a UPS delivery truck during the chain reaction.

According to SAFD, three people—including two SAPD officers—were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.

Did You Know?

Roughly 50% of all traffic injuries and 25% of traffic fatalities occur at intersections across the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration.³

Why Are Multi-Vehicle Accidents More Common at Intersections?

Intersections are high-conflict areas. Drivers are accelerating, braking, turning left, merging, and watching traffic signals—all within a small space. When something unexpected happens, there’s often no room to recover.

That’s why one collision at an intersection can quickly involve several vehicles.

One Event Can Trigger a Chain Reaction

In busy intersections, vehicles are typically close together. If one driver loses control—whether because of distraction, speeding, or even a medical emergency—the initial impact can push vehicles into nearby lanes, sidewalks, or stopped traffic.

In multi-vehicle intersection crashes, it’s common to see:

  • A vehicle pushed into cross-traffic

  • Secondary crashes involving vehicles that were stopped

  • Service vehicles or patrol units struck while responding

  • Commercial vehicles pulled into the collision

What starts as a two-vehicle crash can expand in seconds.

Medical Emergencies Behind the Wheel

In some cases, a driver may suffer a medical episode before the crash. Sudden loss of consciousness, seizures, or cardiac issues can cause a driver to lose control without warning.

When this happens, investigators may examine:

  • Whether the driver had a known medical condition

  • Whether they were medically cleared to drive

  • Whether there were warning signs before the crash

A medical emergency does not automatically eliminate questions about responsibility, but it can significantly affect how liability is evaluated.

Why Intersection Injuries Are Often Severe

Intersections frequently involve side-impact or “T-bone” crashes. The sides of vehicles provide less structural protection than the front or rear, which increases the likelihood of serious injury.

When multiple impacts occur in sequence, occupants may be struck more than once. Common injuries in intersection pileups include:

  • Head and brain injuries

  • Neck and spinal injuries

  • Broken bones

  • Internal injuries

Some injuries—especially concussions and soft tissue damage—may not show full symptoms right away, which is why prompt medical evaluation is critical.

Determining Who Is Responsible

Multi-vehicle crashes are rarely simple. Investigators may review:

  • Traffic light sequencing and timing

  • Vehicle speeds and braking data

  • Witness statements

  • Surveillance or dashcam footage

  • Medical records, if a health episode is suspected

In some cases, more than one party may share responsibility. Texas follows a proportionate responsibility system, meaning fault can be divided based on each party’s actions.

Understanding what happened often requires a detailed review of evidence.
