Driver Accused of Abandoning Injured Passenger After Fleeing Early-Morning Rollover Crash
According to a KSAT News report, a driver fled the scene of a crash, leaving his injured passenger behind last weekend.
Police reported the accident happened at around 2 a.m. Sunday, June 14th, in the 2300 block of Roosevelt Avenue on San Antonio’s South Side. A GMC pickup was traveling northbound on Roosevelt when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over.
The driver fled the scene before police arrived and is accused of abandoning his passenger, a seriously injured 40-year-old man. The passenger was transported to the hospital for treatment.
At the time of the report, no arrests had been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

What Rights Do Injured Passengers Have After an Accident in Texas?
When people think about car accident claims, they usually focus on the drivers involved. But passengers are often the ones who suffer some of the most serious injuries despite having no control over what caused the crash.
Whether you’re riding with a friend, family member, coworker, or rideshare driver, Texas law generally gives injured passengers the right to pursue compensation when someone else’s negligence causes an accident.
Passengers Usually Have Strong Injury Claims
Unlike drivers, passengers are rarely accused of causing a collision. They are not steering the vehicle, controlling its speed, or making driving decisions.
As a result, liability typically falls on one or more of the drivers involved.
Depending on the circumstances, a passenger may have a claim against:
- The driver of the vehicle they were riding in
- Another driver involved in the crash
- Multiple drivers who share fault
- A commercial trucking company
- Other parties whose negligence contributed to the accident
Because passengers are generally free from fault, they often begin the claims process from a stronger legal position than the drivers themselves.
What If the Driver Was a Friend or Family Member?
One of the biggest concerns injured passengers have is whether pursuing a claim means suing someone they care about.
The reality is that most injury claims are initially handled through insurance coverage. The purpose of the claim is to recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, rehabilitation costs, and other damages caused by the accident.
If serious injuries are involved, the costs can quickly exceed what most families can afford out of pocket.
While every situation is different, injured passengers should never assume they have to absorb those losses simply because they know the driver personally.
Abandoning an Injured Passenger Can Make Matters Worse
Drivers involved in accidents have legal responsibilities under Texas law.
When someone causes a crash and leaves an injured passenger behind, the situation becomes much more serious.
Beyond potential criminal consequences, fleeing the scene can become important evidence in a civil claim because it may help demonstrate the driver’s conduct immediately following the accident.
Investigators may examine:
- Whether the driver called for help
- Whether the driver attempted to assist injured occupants
- How long the injured passenger was left without aid
- Whether the delay affected the passenger’s injuries
While fleeing does not automatically determine liability, it can become an important part of the overall case.
Why Rollover Accidents Often Cause Severe Injuries
Rollovers are among the most violent crashes on Texas roads.
During a rollover, occupants can be tossed around the vehicle repeatedly as it rotates. The roof may collapse, windows may shatter, and occupants who are not properly restrained face a higher risk of ejection.
Common rollover injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Broken bones
- Internal bleeding
- Neck and back injuries
Even when victims survive, recovery often requires extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Don’t Wait to Learn About Your Rights
Many passengers assume they cannot pursue compensation because they were not driving. Others avoid looking into a claim because the at-fault driver is a friend or family member.
Those assumptions can be costly.
The sooner an injured passenger understands their rights, the easier it becomes to preserve evidence, document injuries, and identify all available sources of compensation.
