What Should I Have In My Auto Accident Emergency Kit?

Pedestrian accidents are unfortunately common in San Antonio. When a person is struck by a vehicle, the injuries they sustain can be catastrophic. In some cases, they may need emergency first aid before EMS arrives, so it’s a good idea to have an accident emergency kit.

Before trying to administer first aid or gather evidence, call 9-1-1. You are legally required to report an accident involving injury to any person to the police. Additionally, if you are not a healthcare professional, you probably aren’t trained in first aid. Because of this, you should only try to administer the most basic of first aid measures necessary to save someone’s life after calling EMS (9-1-1).

What to Include in an Emergency Kit

In case you are ever in an accident with a pedestrian (0r witness a hit-and-run accident), it’s important to have the proper gear. A fully stocked auto accident emergency kit should include the following:

  • An Up-to-Date First Aid Kit — Fortunately, first aid kits come equipped with everything you’ll need in an emergency situation. Just make sure your kit is not expired, and you’re good to go.
  • Reflective Triangles or Vest — These are useful for alerting oncoming traffic of the situation. You should also use your hazard lights.
  • Fire Extinguisher — To extinguish flames near a vehicle or injured pedestrian.
  • External Battery Phone Charger — The last thing you want is to be unable to quickly contact emergency services in an accident. Carrying an external battery allows you to safely charge your phone if you need to evacuate your vehicle.

Emergency First Aid for Pedestrian Accidents

First aid is only recommended when there is an obvious emergency situation after calling EMS. Tips for helping an injured pedestrian include:

  • Encourage them not to move. Spinal cord and neck injuries are common in pedestrian accidents and are aggravated by movement.
  • Keep them as calm as possible. Tell them help is on the way and not to panic.
  • Apply even pressure to stop any major bleeding unless you see something stuck in the wound or if any bone is protruding out of the wound. A medical professional should handle those injuries.
  • If you suspect a neck injury, place your hands on either side of the head without moving the head to provide support.
  • Cover them with a blanket or jacket for warmth, especially if it is raining or they are wet, to avoid hypothermia.
