Child Traffic Fatalities in Texas

Child safety in Texas becomes even more important during the summer months when kids are out of school and sharing the road at all hours of the day. Children die in auto accidents at an incredibly high rate in Texas, due partially to the fact that overall fatalities are higher but also because of reckless driving behaviors.

Driving Safely Around Children

No matter where a driver is, they should always obey all traffic laws. However, there are a few steps a driver can take to be extra cautious of children when driving.

  • Check Twice When Backing Up – Children can often be missed by a first glance behind when backing up, especially in grocery store parking lots and neighborhood driveways. Many vehicles now come with cameras that increase rear-view visibility, but if you don’t have one, make sure to check twice for children before backing up.
  • Stay Alert and Expect Erratic Behavior – Children at play or on their phones are apt to make poor decisions and not pay attention to drivers, especially in neighborhoods where they feel safe. Expect to encounter erratic behavior from children and always use extra caution when driving through neighborhoods, even when children are not immediately visible.
  • Slow Down – 1 in 5 children killed in auto accidents are pedestrians, and one of the most common factors in pedestrian accidents is speeding. Oftentimes, when a driver is close to their home or in their neighborhood, they relax safety and are more likely to speed, run stop signs, and pay less attention. Always follow the reduced speed limits in neighborhoods and drive even slower at night or when visibility is low.
