Kids Caught on Security Cameras Throwing Fireworks Into the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel

According to a KSAT News report, a fire at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in downtown San Antonio was allegedly caused by children throwing fireworks into the hotel’s loading dock area.¹

The San Antonio Fire Department reported the incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, at the hotel located in the 100 block of Bowie Street. Fire crews were dispatched after paint was discovered smoldering in the loading dock. Hotel security later reviewed surveillance footage that reportedly showed “kids” throwing fireworks into the area, which investigators believe may have caused the fire.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Injuries and Property Damage From Fireworks in Texas

Fireworks are commonly associated with celebrations such as New Year’s Day and Independence Day. While they may appear harmless—especially in the hands of children or teenagers—fireworks are explosives that can cause serious injuries and significant property damage when misused.

Incidents like the recent fire at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel highlight how quickly a dangerous situation can develop, even when no one intends for serious harm to occur. In Texas, fireworks-related incidents raise important questions about negligence, liability, and responsibility, particularly when minors are involved.

Common Firework-Related Injuries

Fireworks cause thousands of injuries across the United States each year. These injuries often happen in seconds and can range from minor burns to life-altering trauma. Common firework-related injuries include:

  • Burns to the hands, face, and eyes

  • Permanent eye damage or vision loss

  • Lacerations and puncture wounds

  • Hearing loss caused by explosive blasts

  • Traumatic amputations of fingers or hands

Children are especially vulnerable, as they may not fully understand the risks associated with fireworks or how quickly fire can spread—particularly in enclosed or commercial spaces.

Fireworks and Property Damage

In addition to physical injuries, fireworks are a frequent cause of fires and structural damage. When fireworks ignite flammable materials such as paint, cardboard, trash, or building materials, fires can spread rapidly and place lives at risk.

Property damage caused by fireworks may include:

  • Fires in hotels, apartment complexes, or other commercial buildings

  • Smoke damage affecting multiple floors or units

  • Water damage resulting from fire suppression efforts

  • Damage to vehicles, nearby structures, or electrical systems

In commercial settings like hotels, even a small fire can lead to evacuations, business interruptions, and costly repairs.

Who May Be Liable for Fireworks-Related Incidents?

Determining liability after a fireworks-related incident depends on the specific facts of the case. When minors are involved, responsibility may extend beyond the children themselves.

Potentially liable parties may include:

  • Parents or legal guardians, if they failed to properly supervise a child or allowed access to fireworks

  • Property owners or managers, if inadequate security or safety measures contributed to the incident

  • Fireworks sellers, in cases involving illegal or improperly labeled fireworks

  • Event organizers or venues, if fireworks were used without proper permits or safety precautions

Texas law generally requires individuals and businesses to take reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable harm. When those steps are not taken, injured parties or property owners may have grounds to pursue a legal claim.

Fireworks Laws in Texas

Texas regulates the sale and use of fireworks based on the type of firework, location, and time of year. Certain fireworks are illegal statewide, while others may be restricted by local ordinances—particularly within city limits or near commercial properties.

Violations of fireworks laws can strengthen a negligence claim, especially when illegal fireworks use directly results in injury or property damage.

What to Do After a Fireworks-Related Incident

If you are injured or your property is damaged due to fireworks, taking prompt action can help protect your rights. Important steps may include:

  • Seeking immediate medical attention for any injuries

  • Reporting the incident to fire officials or law enforcement

  • Documenting injuries and property damage with photos or videos

  • Preserving security footage or witness statements

  • Consulting with an attorney before speaking with insurance companies

Even when no injuries are initially reported, smoke exposure or structural damage may pose delayed risks that should not be ignored.
