Dodge Challenger Flees the Scene After Rear-Ending Commercial Vehicle, Injuring Driver

According to a KSAT News report, a man was seriously injured after a major hit-and-run accident on the South Side.¹

Police reported the accident happened at around 9:32 p.m. Saturday, October 17th, in the 8500 block of Interstate 35 South on San Antonio’s South Side.

Investigators say a Dodge Challenger was traveling at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a commercial vehicle. The impact sent the commercial vehicle rolling off the highway and into a nearby business.

The driver of the Dodge Challenger reportedly fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

The commercial vehicle driver, a 26-year-old man, suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

Driving Safely Around Commercial Vehicles During the 2026 Holiday Season

The holiday season means more traffic on Texas highways, but it also means more commercial vehicles making deliveries and keeping stores, restaurants, and other businesses supplied.

As families travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas, passenger vehicles are sharing crowded roads with delivery vans, work trucks, tractor-trailers, and other commercial vehicles.

That makes patience especially important.

Speeding, following too closely, or making aggressive lane changes around a commercial vehicle can turn an ordinary trip into a serious crash.

Give Commercial Vehicles More Room

Many commercial vehicles are larger and heavier than passenger cars. They also accelerate, turn, and stop differently than the vehicle you drive every day.

Keeping additional space around them gives everyone more time to react.

Avoid following so closely that the commercial vehicle blocks your view of traffic ahead. If traffic suddenly slows, you may not realize what’s happening until the vehicle in front of you begins braking.

Instead:

  • Leave plenty of following distance
  • Watch for brake lights farther up the road when possible
  • Avoid rushing into small gaps around larger vehicles
  • Give commercial drivers room to turn or change lanes

A little extra space can be especially valuable in heavy holiday traffic.

Don’t Linger in a Commercial Vehicle’s Blind Spots

Larger commercial vehicles can have substantial blind spots along their sides and behind them.

If you’re driving beside one, don’t assume the operator knows you’re there.

When it is safe to pass, move by at a steady speed rather than lingering alongside the vehicle. Avoid cutting closely in front after passing, since larger vehicles may need considerably more distance to slow down.

The goal isn’t to stay away from commercial vehicles entirely. It’s to make your movements predictable and give their drivers enough room to react.

Don’t Let Holiday Traffic Turn Into a Race

Holiday travel can test anyone’s patience.

Traffic backs up, exits become crowded, and a trip that normally takes 20 minutes suddenly takes twice as long.

Speeding may feel like a way to make up lost time, but it leaves you with less time to respond when traffic changes.

That becomes especially dangerous around larger vehicles that can block your view or require more room to maneuver.

Plan for delays and leave earlier when you can. Getting somewhere a few minutes sooner isn’t worth turning a frustrating drive into a serious accident.

A Crash Can Affect People Who Weren’t Part of the Initial Collision

A collision doesn’t always stop where the first impact occurs.

When a vehicle is struck hard enough, it may:

  • Roll into another traffic lane
  • Leave the roadway
  • Hit another vehicle
  • Strike a pedestrian
  • Crash into a nearby business or other property

In the South Side crash described above, police reported that the commercial vehicle left the highway and struck a nearby business after being hit from behind.

That is an important reminder for everyone sharing the road: one driver’s mistake can create a chain reaction that puts nearby motorists, passengers, and pedestrians at risk.

What If You’re Injured in an Accident Involving a Commercial Vehicle?

If you’re driving your own vehicle and are injured in a crash involving a commercial truck, delivery van, work vehicle, or another larger vehicle, determining responsibility may take more than simply looking at which vehicles collided.

Depending on what happened, investigators may need to examine:

  • The actions of the commercial driver
  • The actions of another passenger-vehicle driver
  • Whether someone was speeding or distracted
  • Whether a vehicle was properly maintained
  • Whether another driver caused a chain-reaction crash
  • Available dashcam, surveillance, or vehicle data

A commercial vehicle’s presence does not automatically mean its driver or employer caused the accident.

Sometimes, as in the crash described above, another motorist may be the one who creates the initial danger.

Hit-and-Run Crashes Can Make the Investigation Harder

When the driver who caused a collision runs from the scene, identifying that person becomes an important part of the case.

An attorney can help preserve and gather evidence such as:

  • Nearby surveillance footage
  • Dashcam recordings
  • Witness statements
  • Photographs from the scene
  • Vehicle debris
  • Police reports and investigative records

Even if the fleeing driver has not yet been identified, an injured motorist or passenger may still have insurance options depending on the circumstances and their own coverage.

When an Attorney Can Help After a Multi-Vehicle Crash

Crashes involving commercial vehicles and multiple drivers can quickly become complicated because several insurance companies may be involved.

Each insurer may have its own version of who caused the collision and how much it should pay.

An attorney can investigate the entire sequence of events, identify potentially responsible drivers, preserve important evidence, and deal with the insurance companies on your behalf.

That can be especially important when a speeding or hit-and-run driver causes another vehicle to lose control and strike someone who had nothing to do with the original mistake.
