How to Prevent Losing Control of Your Vehicle in Rainy Weather

Early March has brought extended rainy conditions to across San Antonio. After a long period of drought, the first stretches of rain can make roads especially dangerous.

At the same time, Daylight Saving Time and Spring Break travel often lead to increased traffic and fatigued drivers. These factors combined have created hazardous driving conditions for San Antonio drivers this week.

Fortunately, by adjusting driving habits and staying alert, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of losing control on wet roads.

Why Wet Roads Increase the Risk of Crashes

When rain first falls after an extended period of drought, it mixes with oil, dust, and debris that have built up on the pavement. This mixture creates a slick surface that reduces the grip between tires and the road.

Under these conditions, drivers are more likely to lose control if they:

  • Drive too fast for the weather conditions

  • Brake suddenly

  • Turn the steering wheel sharply

  • Change lanes abruptly

The first few minutes of rainfall are often the most dangerous because oil on the roadway has not yet been washed away.

The Danger of Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water forms between a vehicle’s tires and the pavement. When this happens, the tires lose contact with the road and the driver may temporarily lose steering control.

Drivers may notice hydroplaning when:

  • The steering suddenly feels lighter than normal

  • The vehicle begins drifting without steering input

  • The engine revs higher while the vehicle slows down

If you start hydroplaning, you should gradually ease off the accelerator and avoid slamming the brakes until the tires regain traction.

Tips to Stay in Control During Rain

Drivers can significantly reduce the risk of losing control during wet conditions by adjusting their driving behavior.

Helpful precautions include:

  • Slowing down when roads are wet

  • Increasing following distance between vehicles

  • Avoiding sudden braking or sharp turns

  • Ensuring tires have proper tread depth

  • Using headlights to improve visibility

These small adjustments can greatly improve vehicle stability and reaction time during rainy weather.

Why Driver Attention Still Matters

Weather may contribute to accidents, but driver attention remains one of the most important safety factors on the road. Looking at a phone, adjusting navigation systems, or becoming distracted for even a few seconds can reduce a driver’s ability to react to slippery conditions.

Staying focused behind the wheel is one of the most effective ways to prevent a crash.
