Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes 66-Year-Old Woman Outside of Her South Side Home

Neighborhoods are full of hazards for drivers to watch out for.

Driver Flees the Scene After Hitting 66-Year-Old Woman in Front of Her South-Side Home

According to a News4SanAntonio report, a driver fled the scene after striking a 66-year-old woman outside her South Side home.¹

Police reported the crash occurred around 9:33 p.m. on Saturday, December 13th, in front of a residence at the corner of South Zarzamora Street and West Ansley Boulevard. Officers arrived to find the victim — who lives at the home — suffering from serious injuries. She was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators said the woman had stepped outside to check on her vehicle when she was struck by a 2011 Nissan Rogue. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid. If located, the suspect is expected to be charged with Collision Involving Serious Bodily Injury.

Did You Know?

19,156 crashes statewide last year were caused by a failure to yield the right of way in or near a private drive, according to TxDOT crash data.²

Accidents in Residential Neighborhoods

Many people assume neighborhood streets are safer than busy roads. Traffic is slower, distances are shorter, and drivers are often familiar with the area. But accidents in residential neighborhoods happen more often than people realize — and they can be especially dangerous for pedestrians stepping in and out of their homes.

Crashes like this one on South Zarzamora often occur near driveways, parked vehicles, and intersections where drivers may not expect someone to be walking close to the roadway.

Why Neighborhood Accidents Happen

Residential-area crashes are commonly caused by:

  • Drivers not paying attention: Many drivers let their guard down once they’re off main roads.

  • Poor lighting at night: Neighborhood streets are often dimly lit, making pedestrians harder to see.

  • Failure to yield near driveways: Drivers backing out or passing homes may not watch for people stepping outside.

  • Speeding or cutting through neighborhoods: Some drivers use residential streets as shortcuts.

  • Distraction or impairment: Phones, fatigue, or alcohol play a role even on short drives close to home.

In this case, the woman was simply stepping outside her own home — a reminder that these accidents can happen in places we feel safest.

The Serious Consequences of Hit-and-Run Crashes

When a driver flees the scene, injuries can become more severe due to delayed medical help. Under Texas law, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury is a felony offense, punishable by prison time, fines, and license suspension.

For victims, hit-and-run crashes also raise concerns about medical bills and financial recovery. Even if the driver isn’t immediately identified, injured pedestrians may still have options, including:

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage

  • Crime Victims’ Compensation benefits

  • Civil claims once the driver is located

An attorney can help determine which options apply and how to move forward.

How Residents Can Reduce Risk Near Their Homes

While drivers have a legal duty to watch for pedestrians, residents can also take steps to reduce risk:

  • Wear reflective or light-colored clothing  if walking outside after dark

  • Turn on porch lights or exterior lighting when stepping outside

  • Avoid standing near the curb or roadway at night

  • Stay alert — even in familiar areas — and never assume a driver sees you
