Distracted driving takes lives.

Driver Reaches for Phone, Rolls Vehicle on the North Side

According to a KSAT News report, a woman was hospitalized after flipping her vehicle on Highway 281 last Friday.

Police reported the incident occurred overnight at around 1:40 a.m. on November 24, 2023, on Highway 281 near Warzbach Parkway and Bitters. A woman in her 50s dropped her phone on her floorboard while driving and attempted to reach for it. The motion of reaching for the phone caused her to swerve, hitting the corner of a ramp. Black Friday sees an increase in auto accidents of up to 34%.

Prices Drop, Accidents Spike — Black Friday Auto Accidents in San Antonio

How significant of a price drop is worth your health and well-being?

Black Friday is known for busy crowds, tense shoppers, and record-low prices on that new desk you’ve been saving for. But did you know it is also known for significant increases in traffic accidents?

As far as Carabin Shaw is concerned, there is no discount great enough to sacrifice your safety. Let’s take a look at why auto accidents spike over Black Friday weekend and what to do if you were hurt in a Black Friday auto accident.

Why Accidents Increase Over Black Friday

The most obvious reason for this jump in traffic accidents is the increase in traffic during this time. There are more tired, stressed out, and occasionally frantic people crowding the highways and the shopping malls during Black Friday weekend, naturally leading to more opportunities for accidents.

Unsurprisingly, there are specific kinds of accidents that increase with the fall holiday season — parking lot accidents, road rage accidents, and drunk driving accidents.

Parking Lot Accidents

This is probably the least surprising of the accident types. Stores are famously packed across America during this time, and that means more parking lot collisions.

Not only are customers more prevalent in parking lots during Black Friday, but there are also more employees sharing the lot since curbside pickup options are more widespread.

A little over one-third of the auto accidents during Black Friday are reportedly parking lot collisions, but the numbers are likely greater now, considering this data is from 2015.

Road Rage/Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving is prevalent in San Antonio without the 50% off price tags. But since Black Friday and aggression can pretty much be used interchangeably, it’s not surprising that road rage accidents also increase during this weekend.

Drunk Driving

Drunk driving increases around every major holiday in the United States, but Thanksgiving weekend is particularly bad. During the Thanksgiving period in 2021, 31% of traffic fatalities nationwide were the result of a drunk driver, resulting in a staggering 514 deaths.

What to do If You’re Hurt in a Black Friday Accident
