Man Arrested for DWI After Rollover Accident on the North Side

According to a KSAT News report, a man was arrested for a DWI after a single-vehicle rollover accident last Friday night.

Police reported the crash happened at around 2:45 a.m. on March 15th, at the 10700 block of US Highway 281 northbound, near the Nakoma exit. A 23-year-old man was speeding when he lost control of his vehicle, causing him to hit a center barrier. The impact caused his vehicle to flip. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The report also states that the driver was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident and was subsequently arrested on a DWI charge. No other injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

Did You Know?

A driver with a BAC of 0.10% or more is 16 times more likely to cause an accident than a sober driver on average.

How Does Drunk Driving Cause More Accidents?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one:

“I’m not going far, and I know the roads like the back of my hand. Besides, I feel fine! I know I shouldn’t drive drunk, but I’m not paying for an Uber to go down the street. I’ll be fine.”

Many people who drive drunk do it because they don’t feel like it’s actually that much of a risk. They often think they feel fine and maybe have gotten away with a little drunk driving before. And then the unthinkable happens, and they seriously hurt or kill someone in a DWI accident.

How Alcohol Affects Driving Capabilities

You’ve probably heard that alcohol impairs driving abilities, but what does that actually mean?

Alcohol is a depressant, which means it affects major cognitive areas of the brain associated with decision-making, movement, and speech. For example, alcohol affects:

  • Coordination/Motor Skills — Alcohol directly impacts the area of your brain that controls coordination and motor skills. This makes it harder to perform basic tasks like steering and braking.
  • Reaction Time — Alcohol’s effect on the decision-making part of your brain also impacts reaction time. This impacts a driver’s ability to recognize and respond to danger.
  • Vision Impairment — Alcohol slows your eye muscle movements, which makes vision blurry and seeing in the dark more difficult. Drunk drivers often display no crash avoidance behaviors due in part to the inability to see objects and vehicles on the road.
  • Drowsiness — Alcohol’s sedative effects can make it incredibly difficult to stay awake while driving, especially at night when most drunk drivers are on the road.

But if you were feeling these effects, surely you wouldn’t think you were okay to drive… right? Wrong! Alcohol impedes the brain by affecting a neurotransmitter known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This slows brain activity, making it incredibly difficult to make decisions, and distorts perception and judgment.

So, even if alcohol was causing you to feel the above effects, you may not be able to tell, leading you to make a terrible decision that could impact the rest of your life.
