Two More Vehicles Crash Into Buildings in San Antonio This Week

KSAT News reports show two more vehicle-into-building crashes a few days after a stolen vehicle trapped a family in their Northwest side home.

The first incident occurred on October 20th, when a vehicle listed as stolen was found sticking out of a gym on the North Side at around 4 a.m. The driver had already fled the vehicle when police were called to the scene. The gym was closed at the time, and no one was injured.

The second incident occurred the next day on October 21st when police reported a man in his 40s crashed into a home at around 1:10 a.m. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene and arrested on suspicion of a DWI. The bedroom he hit was unoccupied, and no one was injured inside the home.

Did You Know?

An estimated 16,000 Americans are injured in car-into-building crashes every year across the United States.

How to Protect Your Home from Car Crashes in San Antonio

As a reasonable homeowner, you expect your home to sustain minor damage over the years from hail storms, tree branches, and wind, but most people don’t expect a car to come crashing through their front door. But it happens — probably more than you think.

We’ve talked before about what to do if you happen to find a vehicle taking your spot at your dining room table. In this article, we’ll cover what you can do beforehand to protect your home if you’re in an accident-prone neighborhood.

Check Your Insurance Policy

If a car crashes into your home in Texas, they (or whoever caused the crash) are responsible for covering the damages. But, if the driver has no insurance, runs away from the scene, or doesn’t have enough insurance, the rest of the damage would fall to your homeowner’s insurance.

Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover damage from cars crashing into your home. But, not all do, and if you frequently have cars striking your home, your insurance may stop covering those damages.

Install Barriers

Having a bare yard of beautifully cut grass looks great, but there’s nothing stopping a vehicle from plowing into your home if it loses control. Concrete planters are a great option for an aesthetic-looking protection that doesn’t involve industrial-looking bollards. Something as simple as planting a tree in your front yard can potentially stop a vehicle before it ever reaches your home. Also, decorative stones and boulders are expensive but are very effective at stopping vehicles in their tracks.

You can do everything right as a homeowner and still be hurt or left arguing with insurance over an uninvited guest making a surprise entrance through your front window.
