A Car Hit My Fence in San Antonio — Car Damage to Fences and Homes

San Antonio is a very populated city, and there are many homes that face major roadways or are located in high-risk areas for auto accidents. Fences are great at keeping small animals out of your property but not so great at stopping pickup trucks. So, what do you do if someone hits your fence with their car?

The answer will depend on whether or not the driver stuck around to own up to their mistake.

If You Can Locate the Driver

If the driver did not flee the scene of the accident, here’s what to do after they hit your fence with their car:

  1. Call the Police — In Texas, you are required to call the police if anyone is injured or if property damage exceeds $1,000. However, it’s good practice to get a police report on any auto accident you report to your insurance company.
  2. Get Contact and Insurance Information — Just like with any other kind of accident, get the contact information and insurance information of the driver.
  3. Take Pictures — Get pictures of the damage to your fence and the vehicle and pictures of the accident scene in general. Anything you think might be useful.
  4. Report the Accident to Your Insurance Company

Drivers in Texas are required to carry property damage coverage on their auto insurance policy, which should be enough to cover the damage to your fence. If the driver is found to be at fault for the accident, they will be required to cover the cost of the damage.

If You Can’t Locate the Driver

If the driver flees the scene (hit-and-run), then follow these steps:

  1. Call the Police — An accident report is critical, and the police may be able to locate the driver.
  2. Gather Evidence — Take photos of the damage, ask your neighbors if they saw anything, and check your doorbell camera in case it caught the accident.
  3. Report the Accident to Your Insurance

If the police catch the driver, they will be penalized and required to cover the damage to your fence. If they are not caught, your homeowner’s insurance will usually cover the damage.
