Street Racing in Texas
Street racing might seem exciting in movies or on social media, but in real life, it’s reckless and deadly. The crash on I-10 shows how quickly a thrill can turn into tragedy—leaving innocent drivers seriously injured or worse.
Why Street Racing Is So Dangerous
Street racing isn’t just about speed — it’s about losing control. Public roads are not designed for racing, and high speeds make it nearly impossible to react safely to traffic, curves, or obstacles. Common risks include:
-
Loss of control at high speeds – Even experienced drivers can’t predict how a vehicle will handle above 100 mph.
-
Limited reaction time – At highway speeds, a single second of hesitation can mean disaster.
-
Endangering others – Bystanders, passengers, and other drivers often pay the price for someone else’s poor decision.
-
Chain-reaction crashes – High-speed impacts frequently cause rollovers, secondary collisions, and fires.
Texas Street Racing Laws
Texas law treats street racing as a serious crime. Under Transportation Code § 545.420, it’s illegal to participate in any race, drag race, or speed contest on public roads.
Penalties include:
-
Up to $2,000 in fines and 180 days in jail for a first offense
-
Felony charges if someone is seriously injured or killed
-
Driver’s license suspension for up to one year
When a crash causes injury or death—like the I-10 incident—drivers can face second-degree felony charges, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
What Victims Can Do After a Street Racing Accident
Even when police make arrests, victims still have the right to file a civil claim for compensation. You may be able to recover damages for:
-
Emergency and long-term medical care
-
Lost wages or reduced earning capacity
-
Pain and suffering
-
Property damage
Because racing incidents often involve multiple cars, identifying who’s liable can be complex. A skilled attorney can investigate all responsible parties—including other racers or event organizers—to help you recover full compensation.
How to Report Illegal Street Racing in Texas
If you witness street racing, never confront the drivers directly. Instead:
-
Call 911 to report active racing in progress.
-
Provide specific details—location, vehicle descriptions, and direction of travel.
-
In San Antonio, you can also submit tips to SAPD’s Street Racing Task Force through SAPD Non-Emergency Line (210-207-7273) or online crime reporting portals.
-
Across Texas, you can support TxDOT’s #EndTheStreakTX campaign by promoting safe driving and reporting reckless behavior.
Timely reports help authorities track illegal racing activity and prevent future tragedies.
