Leg Injuries and Auto Accidents in San Antonio

We don’t often talk about leg injuries after an auto accident, but they can have an extreme impact on your life.

Leg injuries, especially broken bones, can limit mobility, impact your ability to work, and even result in severe trauma or PTSD. They can also be fatal if the femur is fractured, as it often results in high blood loss. Clearly, leg injuries are no joke.

Let’s take a look at common leg injuries suffered in San Antonio auto accidents and where to get legal help after your leg injury.

Common Types of Leg Injuries in Car Accidents

For the purposes of this blog, leg injuries refer to any injury to the thighs, knees, calves, ankles, or feet. Car accidents frequently cause the following leg injuries:

The sudden and extreme force of a car accident can put immense pressure on and fracture the bones in your leg. Fractures in the femur are the most severe, followed by fractures to the shin and calf. Regardless, these kinds of injuries are extremely painful and can take anywhere from 2 weeks to over a year to fully heal, depending on location and severity.

Knee Injuries

Your knees can be injured in several ways because of an auto accident. Torn ACLs or MCLs and cartilage damage are very common. Dislocated knee caps, sprains, and inflamed bursae (“cushion sacs” in the knee that pad the bones) are also common. Knee injuries can take anywhere from two weeks to 9 months to heal.

Nerve Injuries

The punching or severing of nerves in the leg can cause numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in a particularly severe leg injury. Extensive therapy and surgery are often required to heal nerve damage. Nerve damage can take weeks or months to heal.

Blood Clots

After a blunt force trauma injury from an auto accident, blood clots can form in the legs from vein damage. If these clots break loose and make their way into the lungs, they can cause a life-threatening situation.

If you suffer a leg injury in an auto accident, call 9-1-1 as soon as possible and seek medical attention, even if you don’t think the injury is severe. It could save your life.
