Drunk driving exponentially increases the risk of an accident.
Suspected Drunk Driver Rear-Ends VIA Bus, Flees the Scene Before Being Arrested
A driver was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly crashing into a VIA bus and fleeing the scene, according to a report from News4SanAntonio.¹
Police say the crash happened around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, on Blanco Road near Basse Road on San Antonio’s North Side. Authorities reported that an unidentified man driving a yellow Hyundai rear-ended a VIA bus and then left the scene of the crash.
Officers quickly located the suspect, identified as a 30-year-old man, who was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said they believed the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. No passengers were on the bus, and the bus driver was not injured.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Did You Know?
During 2024, more DUI- and alcohol-related crashes in Texas were reported between 2:00 a.m. and 2:59 a.m. than during any other hour of the day, according to data from the Texas Department of Transportation.²
Can You File an Injury Claim If You’re Hurt in a Bus Accident in San Antonio?
Bus accidents can be alarming—especially when they involve suspected drunk driving or a hit-and-run. Even when injuries are not immediately obvious, these crashes can raise serious safety and legal concerns for drivers, passengers, and others nearby.
If you’re injured in a bus accident in San Antonio, you may have the right to file an injury claim, depending on how the crash occurred and who was responsible.
Bus Accidents Can Still Cause Serious Injuries
Although buses are larger and heavier than most vehicles, occupants are not immune to injury. Sudden impacts can cause violent jolts, throwing drivers or passengers forward or sideways.
Common injuries in bus-related crashes include head and brain injuries, neck and back injuries, broken bones, and soft tissue injuries. In some cases—especially after late-night crashes—symptoms may not appear right away.
Does It Matter Who Caused the Crash?
Yes. Determining fault is a key part of any injury claim. In bus accidents, liability may involve one or more parties, depending on the circumstances.
Potentially responsible parties may include:
-
A drunk, distracted, or reckless driver
-
A hit-and-run driver
-
The bus operator
-
A government entity or transit authority
-
A vehicle or parts manufacturer
When a driver is suspected of being intoxicated, that factor can weigh heavily in determining responsibility.
What If the Driver Fled the Scene?
Leaving the scene of an accident is illegal in Texas. While a hit-and-run can make a situation more stressful, it does not eliminate an injured person’s legal rights.
If police locate and arrest the driver, injured victims may still be able to pursue compensation. Even when a driver is not immediately identified, other legal options may exist depending on insurance coverage and the facts of the case.
Bus Accidents and Government Entities
Public buses, such as VIA buses, are typically operated by government entities. Injury claims involving government agencies follow different rules than standard car accident cases.
These claims may involve:
-
Shorter notice deadlines
-
Special procedural requirements
-
Limits on certain types of damages
Missing a deadline can prevent a claim altogether, which is why early guidance is especially important.
What to Do After a Bus Accident
If anyone is injured in a crash in Texas, the law requires that the accident be reported to law enforcement. Calling the police ensures that injuries are documented and that an official crash report is created. That report can become a critical piece of evidence if you later decide to file an insurance claim or pursue legal action.
In addition to reporting the crash, it’s important to seek medical care, document injuries and vehicle damage if possible, keep medical records and receipts, and avoid speaking with insurance companies before understanding your rights.
When Legal Help May Be Needed
Bus accidents often involve complicated liability issues—especially when alcohol, hit-and-run behavior, or government entities are involved. Understanding your options can help you make informed decisions after a crash.
