What is Legionnaires Disease? A possibly lethal type of bacteria that lurks, frequently undetected, in the water flowing through the plumbing systems, hot tubs and showers of our hospitals, nursing homes and hotels. It is a virulent form of pneumonia which has a mortality, or death, rate that can be as high as 50 percent of those infected. When you’re exposed to Legionella, the actual name of the infectious bacteria which thrives in warm water, people can come down with a severe form of atypical bacterial pneumonia. However, you don’t actually have to drink the water itself to be risk a significant lung infection. If you just inhale any of tiny airborne droplets, vapor, of the bacteria you could be exposed sufficiently to infect you. This is especially true if you’re part of a high-risk group. If, for instance, you have a history of smoking, a chronic lung disease, a compromised immune system or you are older than age 50.

It’s actually quite rare for Legionnaires Disease infection to result from a contaminated home water system. The bacteria multiply- and thrive- much more in more complex, larger water systems like those used in large buildings and other sizeable structures.

Even though the Legionella bacteria can be found naturally in potting soil, ponds and creeks, most actual cases of diagnosed Legionnaires’ disease come from when the bacteria is found indoors, in large plumbing and water systems.

If you do develop Legionnaires’ disease, you’ll usually feel flu-like symptoms, within 2 to 10 days of your being exposed to the disease, The Mayo Clinic reported.

• Headache
• Chills

Within a few days, some additional symptoms may present themselves, including:

• Feeling short of breath
• Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting
• Coughing up blood or mucus
• Confusion
• Chest pain

Legionnaires’ disease is not contagious between people. You can’t actually contract this disease from being in contact with someone who is sick. But Legionnaires is a preventable kind of infection. When property managers and/or owners don’t prevent it, many thousands of people can get sick – and many of them can die from this disease.
