What is Legionnaires Disease? A possibly lethal type of bacteria that lurks, frequently undetected, in the water flowing through the plumbing systems, hot tubs and showers of our hospitals, nursing homes and hotels. It is a virulent form of pneumonia which has a mortality, or death, rate that can be as high as 50 percent of those infected. This sounds like a living nightmare, but for thousands other Americans, Legionnaires’ disease is devastating, life threatening, reality.

What Actually is Legionnaires’ Disease?

When you’re exposed to Legionella, the actual name of the infectious bacteria which thrives in warm water, people can come down with a severe form of atypical bacterial pneumonia. However, you don’t actually have to drink the water itself to be risk a significant lung infection. If you just inhale any of tiny airborne droplets, vapor, of the bacteria you could be exposed sufficiently to infect you. This is especially true if you’re part of a high-risk group. If, for instance, you have a history of smoking, a chronic lung disease, a compromised immune system or you are older than age 50.

It’s actually quite rare for Legionnaires Disease infection to result from a contaminated home water system. The bacteria multiply- and thrive- much more in more complex, larger water systems like those used in large buildings and other sizeable structures.

Legionella Bacteria are More Usually Found in Places Like:
  • Mist sprayers, such as those in produce sections at your grocery store
  • Cooling towers like those found in commercial air conditioners
  • Large, complicated water systems in buildings like nursing homes, hospitals and hotels
  • Humidifiers
  • Showers and faucets
  • Decorative fountains
  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs, whirlpool spas, Jacuzzis, especially at hotels and on cruise ships

Even though the Legionella bacteria can be found naturally in potting soil, ponds and creeks, most actual cases of diagnosed Legionnaires’ disease come from when the bacteria is found indoors, in large plumbing and water systems.

Symptoms of Infection With Legionnaires Disease

If you do develop Legionnaires’ disease, you’ll usually feel flu-like symptoms, within 2 to 10 days of your being exposed to the disease, The Mayo Clinic reported.

The Early Symptoms Which Indicate Legionnaires’ Disease Can Include:
  • Muscle Pain
  • High Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills

Within a few days, some additional symptoms may present themselves, including:

  • Feeling short of breath
  • Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting
  • Coughing up blood or mucus
  • Confusion
  • Chest pain

Legionnaires’ disease is not contagious between people. You can’t actually contract this disease from being in contact with someone who is sick. But Legionnaires is a preventable kind of infection. When property managers and/or owners don’t prevent it, many thousands of people can get sick – and many of them can die from this disease.

Treating and Diagnosing Legionnaires Disease

If you think you or a family member may have Legionnaires’ disease – or, in fact, if you have any problem breathing – then you really need to get prompt medical attention.

How Many People Actually die From Legionnaires Disease?

In usual cases, the mortality rate for Legionnaires’ disease is at least five and as many as 30 percent of those infected. The actual death rate changes from one outbreak to the next. But hospital patients and hospital-acquired cases who do not get treated right away have a mortality rate that jumps to a truly scary nearly-50 percent.

But filing and prosecuting a personal injury case against the property manager or owner who got you exposed to Legionnaires Disease isn’t only about getting you compensation. It’s not only about making that property manager and/or owner face the just consequences of their action. Fighting before and in Court to have any property’s water systems checked for contamination could well save lives. The same people who put you or your family in danger you will keep endangering countless other unsuspecting people – unless you take some action to stop them. We can be that action for you.
