What Factors Make a Road Dangerous?

San Antonio roads can be windy and confusing. The city follows a wheel-and-spoke pattern rather than a traditional grid, and if you don’t know the roads well, it’s easy to get confused.

Some roads see far more accidents than others, like I-35 and Culebra. What makes these roads more dangerous, and what can you do to avoid a serious accident while driving on these roads?

Factors That Make Roads More Dangerous

Human error is the cause of most accidents across the United States, and San Antonio is no exception. However, there are designs and conditions that elevate crash risks on certain roads over others.

  1. Temporary Conditions — Heavy rainfall, standing water, flood risks, and construction are all temporary conditions that can increase crash risks. These effects can be felt more keenly on certain roads.
  2. Permanent Conditions — Roads with winding curves, sharp turns, high speed limits, and poor signage have more opportunities for accidents. Roads with high speed limits and heavy traffic also experience more accidents than roads with lower speed limits.
  3. Maintenance Issues — Faded lines, potholes, cracks in the pavements, overgrown trees, and missing signs can create a dangerous situation for drivers, increasing the risk of an accident.

Tips for Navigating Dangerous Roads

You can’t always avoid driving on dangerous roads. Keep yourself safe by following these tips:

  • Obey the posted speed limit,
  • Reduce speed in low visibility conditions,
  • Wear your seatbelt,
  • Put all distractions away,
  • Leave extra following distance,
  • Don’t drive drunk,
  • Don’t participate in aggressive driving behaviors,
  • And plan your route ahead of time so you don’t need to be distracted by checking GPS frequently

Of course, you can follow every rule of the road and still be injured by a negligent driver.
