Dog Bites Are a Common and Serious Problem in San Antonio

San Antonio has a big problem with serious dog attack injuries.

In recent years, ACS has reported responding to roughly 3,000 cases per year in San Antonio. Some notable and deadly incidents have been covered on this blog, such as:

  1. Amazon Driver Bitten in the Face by Pit Bull While Delivering Package
  2. Man Shoots Dogs Attacking 40-Year-Old Man
  3. Infant Boy Mauled to Death by Dogs at Babysitter’s Home
  4. Two Small Girls Attacked by Babysitter’s Pit Bull
  5. Pit Bull Attacks and Hospitalizes Owner and Bystanders

Dog bite cases have steadily been getting more serious across the city. No matter where they happen, dog bites can result in severe injuries–especially to children and the elderly.

Why Do Dogs Attack Neighbors, Pedestrians, Strangers, and Owners?

Most people tend to think of breeds first when considering which dogs are most likely to bite. While some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others, studies from the National Canine Research Council have found that any dog can bite at any time, and owner responsibility is a more reliable factor than breed in determining aggressiveness.

Dogs usually bite for two reasons:

  1. Fear
  2. Teritorial Aggression

When dogs get loose from their yards, they are more likely to be both afraid and territorial of pedestrians, especially if they start to run or are riding a bike or something similar.

However, more than half of all dog bites happen at home with familiar dogs–adults with two or more dogs are five times as likely to be bitten as those with no dogs. 77% of dog attacks happen at the home of a relative or known associate (neighbor, friend, babysitter, etc.).

How Can Dog Owners Prevent Attacks?

Even though the dog may be attacking out of fear or territorial aggression, owners are responsible for preventing these attacks.

Dog owners of any breed can curb their pet’s aggressive tendencies and prevent an attack by:

  • Containing their pets: Ensure that pets can’t escape their yards or homes, and keep them on a leash when walking in a public place.
  • Socializing their pets: Dogs that are properly socialized with other dogs and people as a puppy develop better social skills than isolated pets.
  • Training their pets: Behavioral training courses can teach dogs of any age to be less reactive and obey commands better.

Dog owners in San Antonio can face criminal and civil responsibility if their dog bites or mauls a person.
