Two Dead, Two Critically Injured in High-Speed Accident on the South Side

High-speed accidents often result in more severe injuries and vehicle damage.

Mustang Slams Into Sedan, Killing Both Drivers and Injuring Two Passengers in High-Speed Accident

According to a News4SanAntonio report, two people are dead and two are critically injured after a high-speed accident near I-35 on the South Side.¹

Police reported the accident happened at around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, August 17th, near the corner of Fischer Road and I-35 Westbound. A Ford Mustang collided with a Ford Fusion at the intersection. Investigators said the Mustang was traveling at a high rate of speed down Fischer when it hit the Fusion that was heading westbound, crossing Fischer.

The driver of the Mustang and the driver of the Fusion were pronounced dead at the scene. Each vehicle had one passenger; both were critically injured and transported to the hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

Did You Know?

In 2024, 1,050 people were killed in crashes occurring in intersections or related to an intersection in Texas.²

The Dangers of Speeding at Intersections

Intersections are among the most hazardous places on Texas roads. With vehicles approaching from multiple directions, pedestrians present, and drivers making split-second decisions, there is little room for error. When speeding is added to the mix, that margin for safety is erased.

A driver traveling above the speed limit has far less time to react to changing traffic lights, stop signs, or vehicles entering an intersection. The force of impact at higher speeds also makes collisions significantly more destructive, often leading to catastrophic injuries or fatalities.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, excessive speed continues to be one of the top causes of intersection-related deaths statewide. In busy areas of San Antonio—particularly near highways like I-35, I-10, and Loop 410—speeding not only endangers the reckless driver but also everyone else sharing the road.

Who Can Be Held Liable After a High-Speed Intersection Crash?

When a family loses a loved one in a speeding-related accident, one of the first questions is whether legal action is possible. In Texas, liability often depends on whether another driver’s negligence caused the crash. Speeding is a recognized form of negligence, meaning the driver who disregards the speed limit can often be held responsible.

In certain cases, liability may extend beyond the driver to include:

  • Bars, Restaurants, or Social Hosts – if alcohol was overserved to the driver.

  • Vehicle Owners – if they allowed an unlicensed or reckless driver to use their car.

  • Government Entities – if dangerous road design or poor traffic control contributed.

Families may pursue wrongful death claims, while injured passengers may file personal injury claims to recover damages such as medical costs, lost income, and pain and suffering.

Protecting Your Rights After a Fatal Crash

The aftermath of a fatal crash is overwhelming, but legal action must often be taken quickly. Evidence such as surveillance footage, traffic light data, or eyewitness testimony can disappear if not secured promptly. By contacting an attorney early, families ensure that vital details are preserved.

A lawyer can also investigate all contributing factors, identify liable parties, and handle negotiations with insurance companies to pursue the maximum compensation available under Texas law.
