History of SJS
Most of the public does not know much or understand the condition of SJS. Approximately fifty years ago the condition surfaced soon after the introduction of the antibiotic drugs derived from sulfonamides. These drugs were used to prevent infection in battlefield wounds during the second World War. These types of drugs quickly became a common first aid treatment before the availability of penicillin. Unfortunately, "sulfa", as it was called, can trigger extreme allergic reactions that most medical professionals had no experience treating. Over the next few fourty plus years, sulfonamides were used in a larger variety of medicines than antibiotics.
Then over the last ten years, the popular COX-2 Inhibitor drugs such as Celebrex and Bextra were discovered to triggered the condition SJS. Now many experts in the field agree that drugs such as common antibiotics, barbiturates, Dilantin, Lamictal, Bextra, Motrin and Viramune can cause SJS.
