SAPD Looking for Driver Involved in Deadly Street-Racing Crash Earlier this Month

Almost two weeks ago, a man identified as 30-year-old Daynier Bello-Vazquez died after crashing his car into a fence, stopping in a backyard, and catching fire. Now, police are looking for another vehicle that was possibly racing with Bello-Vazquez before he crashed.

According to the KSAT News report, a white, four-door sedan appeared to be racing with Bello-Vazquez down Blanco Road and Briarcliff Drive on February 2nd, at around 2:30 a.m. Police reported that the sedan returned to the scene but did not stop to render aid or provide information. Crime Stoppers is willing to pay up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP or texting “Tip 127 plus your tip” to CRIMES (274637). Drag racing and street racing are not the same thing. A drag race is legal, professional, and takes place on a course; street racing is illegal and often leads to innocent people being killed.

Injured by Street Racing in San Antonio

We’ve all seen major films that depict scenes of impromptu street races resulting in little to no consequences. But just because some major Hollywood actors perform their own stunts doesn’t mean that their movies reflect reality.

Street racing is an incredibly dangerous trend that has been affecting San Antonio recently. Fortunately, if you were hurt or lost a family member because of street racers, you have the right to pursue damages.

Injury Claims for Street Racing Accidents

Missed work, medical bills, funeral expenses — the financial burden of an injury from a street racing accident can quickly become overwhelming. Victims are able to file injury claims to recover these losses from the negligent party.

Usually, this compensation comes from the driver’s insurance company. But, since street racing is illegal, it isn’t covered under auto insurance policies. A civil lawsuit can be filed against the drivers directly. These lawsuits can be complicated, so hiring a personal injury attorney to represent your claim is encouraged.

Damages in Street Racing Accidents

The laws against street racing have intensified to match the growing threat to San Antonio residents. The city recognizes the danger and intense suffering street racing presents to you. To that end, recoverable damages for a street racing injury include:

  1. Medical bills — Including past medical treatments and future medical expenses.
  2. Lost wages — If your injury caused you to miss work, lose income, or will affect your future income.
  3. Property damage — This can include damage to your vehicle or residential property or other items damaged in the accident.
  4. Pain and suffering — The emotional distress or physical pain resulting from your accident may be grounds for compensation.
  5. Funeral Expenses — If the accident bereaved you of a family member.

This is not an exhaustive list. Each person’s loss is unique, and every claim will be different. To find out if you have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit, you will need to have your case evaluated by an auto accident attorney.
