Construction Zone Accidents Can Have Fatal Consequences.

Worker Killed by Falling Equipment 

A 51-year-old construction worker died on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, after equipment fell and crushed him, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. The worker, who the Medical Examiner’s Office later identified as Shawn Jimmy Pedregon, was fixing a collapsed manhole when the equipment gave way, causing him to fall 15 feet with the equipment falling on top of him and trapping him. The incident occurred on the 5100 block of Rogers Road on the West Side at around 8 a.m. that morning.

Three-Car Pile-Up Leaves Girl in Critical Condition

A 3-car pile-up left a girl in critical condition on the far West Side of San Antonio on Saturday, June 3, 2023, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. According to the report, the accident happened on the 9200 block of Potranco Road at around 10:30 p.m. A vehicle was making a lane change when it cut in front of another vehicle that was also attempting a lane change. Those two vehicles collided with one another, and the vehicle in the back was struck by another vehicle from behind as a result. The accident resulted in only one reported injury, a girl whose age is unknown, and she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition after being freed from the mangled vehicle by firefighters.

18-Wheeler accidents usually result in catastrophic injuries.

Wrong-Way I-35 Driver Hits 18-Wheeler Head-On

San Antonio Express-News reported an accident involving an 18-wheeler on I-35 that occurred yesterday, May 15, 2023. For reasons unknown, a driver was going the wrong way on Interstate 35 near Fischer Road at 2:30 a.m. The driver swerved to miss three other vehicles and continued to drive the wrong way without stopping when he crashed head-on into an 18-wheeler. The police reported no injuries in either vehicle. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Woman Sets Fire to Apartment Then Assaults Officer

A 53-year-old woman was arrested and charged with a first-degree felony after setting fire to her apartment and assaulting an officer, according to San Antonio Express-News. For reasons unknown, the woman set fire to a pillowcase in her Forest Oak Apartment, leaving it in the middle of her floor after pouring juice on the flames. She reported the fire to maintenance employees and then walked down the street, where she was stopped by an officer, whom she punched before being arrested. She has been charged with three counts of arson of a habitation since the fire spread to two other apartments. No injuries were reported as a result of the crime.

San Antonio Zoo Sued for Over 1 million

A San Antonio family has filed a negligence claim against the San Antonio Zoological Society after a tree limb fell on them, causing their young daughter a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and leaving her in a coma for several days, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. According to premises liability law, businesses are required to ensure that their grounds are free of hazards for invitees and licensees. The claim filed by Librado and Crystal Rodriguez claims that the San Antonio Zoological Society was negligent in this duty and is, therefore, responsible for damages related to the accident.

A Tragic Appointment

A now-deceased San Antonio area dentist is being sued for medical malpractice after he incorrectly administered anesthesia and left his patient his severe brain damage. The incident occurred almost exactly a year ago when Maria Elena Lugo Querales went in for a dental procedure requiring anesthesia in May 2022. According to San Antonio Express-News, everything seemed normal at the office, and the doctor appeared to be fine – she was unaware that he had just been reported as a missing person the day prior after getting lost near his home due to a medical condition that was affecting his cognitive abilities. According to the complaint, the dentist administered an incorrectly large dose of anesthesia and left her without a heartbeat and without breathing for long enough for her to contract anoxic encephalopathy, which is a severe injury to the brain due to a lack of oxygen.

In a freak accident, a tree fell on San Antonio Zoo guests on March 15, 2023, injuring seven guests. San Antonio Express-News reported that visitors were sitting on a bench underneath a large tree when they suddenly heard cracking noises from above. Before they had time to react, a large tree limb broke off and fell on top of them. This accident injured five children and two adults, with one of the children in critical condition. (March 1, 2023) A pedestrian bridge collapsed after a dump truck crashed into it, causing the road to be closed while the debris was being cleared on February 21, 2023. The incident occurred at around 11:17 a.m. on the west side near the intersection of San Joaquin Avenue and Castroville Road, according to San Antonio Express-News. There were no reported injuries, and there is still no explanation as to why the accident happened. The sheer size of the state of Texas means that we have significantly more bridges than most states. Unfortunately, the United States has a bit of a bridge problem, and this has resulted in millions of dollars in property damage and personal injury over the years.

Simple behaviors could make dogs become aggressive

(February 28, 2023) Christian Alexander Moreno has been charged with criminal negligence after his pit bulls mauled an 81-year-old man to death. According to San Antonio Express-News, first responders, including firefighters, responded to the call around 2 p.m. on February 24, 2023, and found the man being dragged across the street by the dogs. They rescued him and his wife, who was also mauled, and transported them to the hospital, where the man later passed away. One of the relatives the couple was visiting and a firefighter captain were also treated for injuries sustained during the rescue, but they were later released along with the man’s 74-year-old widow. Unfortunately, this is not the first time those dogs have been involved in an animal attack, and the owner did not take the proper steps to secure the animals in spite of this.

The most common place for a burn injury at home

(February 15, 2023) A four-year-old girl was found dead after being trapped in a trailer that erupted into flames on Sunday, February 12, 2023, on the southwest side of Bexar County. The flames also severely burned two residents of the trailer home, as well as a firefighter and sheriff’s deputy, and two other deputies needed to be treated for smoke inhalation after rescue attempts. This tragedy is currently under investigation by the sheriff’s and fire marshal’s offices, and the identity of the young girl has not been released at this time.
