Woman Sets Fire to Apartment Then Assaults Officer

A 53-year-old woman was arrested and charged with a first-degree felony after setting fire to her apartment and assaulting an officer, according to San Antonio Express-News. For reasons unknown, the woman set fire to a pillowcase in her Forest Oak Apartment, leaving it in the middle of her floor after pouring juice on the flames. She reported the fire to maintenance employees and then walked down the street, where she was stopped by an officer, whom she punched before being arrested. She has been charged with three counts of arson of a habitation since the fire spread to two other apartments. No injuries were reported as a result of the crime.

Simple behaviors could make dogs become aggressive

(February 28, 2023) Christian Alexander Moreno has been charged with criminal negligence after his pit bulls mauled an 81-year-old man to death. According to San Antonio Express-News, first responders, including firefighters, responded to the call around 2 p.m. on February 24, 2023, and found the man being dragged across the street by the dogs. They rescued him and his wife, who was also mauled, and transported them to the hospital, where the man later passed away. One of the relatives the couple was visiting and a firefighter captain were also treated for injuries sustained during the rescue, but they were later released along with the man’s 74-year-old widow. Unfortunately, this is not the first time those dogs have been involved in an animal attack, and the owner did not take the proper steps to secure the animals in spite of this.

(February 15, 2023) A four-year-old girl was found dead after being trapped in a trailer that erupted into flames on Sunday, February 12, 2023, on the southwest side of Bexar County. The flames also severely burned two residents of the trailer home, as well as a firefighter and sheriff’s deputy, and two other deputies needed to be treated for smoke inhalation after rescue attempts. This tragedy is currently under investigation by the sheriff’s and fire marshal’s offices, and the identity of the young girl has not been released at this time.

Construction workers are often exposed to dangerous working conditions

(November 3, 2022) Yesterday, November 2, 2022, a construction worker in the Northside of San Antonio was rushed to the hospital after an accident, as reported by KSAT 12. The worker was laying down pipes when he fell twenty feet into a hole, where he remained trapped until firefighters rescued him. Fortunately, the hole was not at risk of collapsing, and he received no life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall. With construction across San Antonio comes risks for the construction workers and drivers using the under-construction freeways. Unfortunately, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that 40,000 injuries a year and three fatalities a day are the results of vehicle traffic and poor operation on construction sites. Two Men Die One Day Apart in Single-Vehicle Accidents

(June 16, 2022) On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, a man tragically died after crashing his vehicle into a tree while leaving his workplace. There were no passengers in the car, and the cause of the accident is unknown. The accident was reported by a coworker who saw him crash while leaving the building and called the police for help. The responding firefighters and emergency medical staff were able to cut him out of the vehicle; however, he was unfortunately already dead. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic single-vehicle accident happened at around 6:40 a.m. this morning on South Zarzamora Street near Hunter’s Pond, just south of Loop 410 on San Antonio’s South side. The investigation is still ongoing, but officers at the scene mentioned the 39-year-old man may have fallen asleep at the wheel. A Toyota spokesperson mentioned in a statement that the man worked for a supply company to the Toyota plant he was leaving but was not a Toyota employee.

This accident follows just one day after authorities identified Jose Ramirez as the 36-year-old victim of a single-vehicle accident on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. This accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on the North Side of San Antonio on Patricia and Bel Air drive. He was heading southeast when for unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a nearby median. Authorities were able to cut away the top of his vehicle to pull him free, but he was also pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, but authorities stated that speed was a likely factor in this single-vehicle accident.

Vicious Dog Attack Leaves Texas Woman Permanently Disabled

On December 23, 2021, the day before Christmas Eve and the day before her 22nd birthday, Jaqueline Durand was viciously mauled by two dogs. As reported by Today News, the Texas college student was scheduled to walk these dogs and had been given the key to the front door by the owners. She had previously met the dogs and the owners without incident. However, the owners had failed to mention that the animals in question had violent reactions to anyone who approached the front door. NBC News reported that the owners had a sign indicating their awareness of the danger, “The lawsuit cited a sign by the Bishops’ home entrance that read: “Crazy Dogs. Please Don’t Knock or Ring the Bell. Call or Text Instead.” The sign also urged visitors to leave packages by the door, according to the lawsuit” (2022). According to the lawsuit filed by Durand’s attorney she was attacked immediately upon opening the front door. The mauling was so violent that Jaqueline lost both of her ears and her lips, as well as most of her face below her eyes. The neighbor who rescued Jaqueline and called 911 was also bitten twice as detailed by the Lawsuit. Jaqueline was rushed to the hospital and was immediately placed in an induced coma which she did not come out of until January 5th. She has undergone eight surgeries since then, with a ninth scheduled to replace her lower eyelids. In an interview with Jaqueline’s father conducted by Today News, he said she was unable to speak to them at first due to the extent of her injuries, requiring her to communicate with sign language which she had previously learned while working with disabled and deaf children.

A study conducted by the CDC found that roughly 4.5 million people are bitten every year in the United States. The Census Bureau reported roughly 330 million people are currently living in the United States, meaning that approximately 1 in 72 people is bitten by dogs every year. (Marshall, Texas – January 5, 2020) Two people died and three were injured following a three-vehicle wreck just east of Marshall Sunday night. DPS troopers investigating the crash determined that Haley Lynn Carroll, 22, was heading east on US 80 in a Dodge Caliber when she stopped at CR 2218 intersection, waiting to make a left turn.

A Ford Mustang driven by Nathan Charles Guyer, 20, of Marshall, was also going east on US 80 behind Carroll’s vehicle, when he failed to stop and struck the Dodge Caliber. Police said the Dodge was then pushed into the westbound lane of US 80, where it was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Blazer driven by Jesse Wayne Wink, 69, of Marshall.
