New Danger for Swimmers This Summer Due to a Lack of Lifeguards

pexels-markus-spiske-97047-200x300 Friday, July 2, 2021, Texas: As Americans head back to beaches and pools this summer, there is a new warning for families: Swim at their own risk. Some parts of the country are experiencing a dire lifeguard shortage. Pool openings were actually delayed in Texas with reported that hundreds of lifeguard jobs were still available in early June.

Tom Gill, Vice President of the U.S. Lifesaving Association, said, “There’s no substitute for safety, and the lifeguards are a part of the safety chain. The pandemic is largely to blame for the shortage. Towns are not able to hire, train, and certify new lifeguards fast enough, just as more Americans are flocking to waterfront destinations for the summer.”

Some pools have closed due to staffing shortages. A few facilities have posted notices on Facebook and websites turning away eager pool-goers. In Austin, Texas, the rapidly growing city is trying to stay afloat with just 250 lifeguards registered with the city compared to 750 in a typical year. “We just don’t have the time to get the lifeguards trained and on the payroll for this summer,” said Jodi Jay of Austin Parks and Recreation.

Wednesday September 2, 2020 Cameron County: The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate a two-vehicle head-on collision that left three people dead, including two children.

The accident happened at about 1:53 p.m. Wednesday September 2nd, on FM 803 North of St. Francis Street in Los Fresnos.

Killed in the accident was Maria Guadalupe Zamora, 49, who died at the scene. Zamora’s grandchildren, Ariel Castillo, 2 and Reynaldo Alvarado, 6, both of Port Isabel, who were traveling with her, were transported to local hospitals where they later died, the DPS reported.

May 23, 2020: San Antonio, TEXAS–The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday on Interstate 10 near the Dominion on the north side of San Antonio. Justin Antwan Jackson, 29, the driver of the 18-wheeler, involved in the incident is now charged with failure to Stop and Render Aid after his truck rear-ended a red Ford Fiesta that was stalled on US I-10.

The driver of the car, Donna Falkenberg, 46, was killed in the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene. San Antonio Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.

According to an arrest affidavit, Jackson was traveling southbound in the right-most lane when it neared the stalled Ford Fiesta, which had on its hazard lights. Jackson told police that he tried to avoid another vehicle that appeared to be crossing into the lane next to him and did not see the Ford until the crash was unavoidable.

ACCIDENT INJURY REPORT: Two People Dead, Man Jumps off Overpass as Tractor-trailer Veers Into Vehicles On North Freeway in Houston

April 12, 2020, Houston: Two people were killed after an Amazon tractor-trailer smashed into several vehicles that were stopped on a Houston North freeway early Friday April 10th due to previous collisions, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

An SUV towing a trailer driven by Anthony Alvarado, 22, with his wife, their children, ages 1 and 3, got a flat tire. While trying to exit the highway, a Mazda 3 sedan hit the trailer and ended up sideways in traffic. A third vehicle, a Silverado pickup truck driven by Tyler Vail, 29, came up to the crash and while trying to avoid the accident ended up colliding with a barrier on the freeway coming to a stop in the middle lane.

During this time the driver of the Mazda and the SUV’s passenger got out of their vehicles. It was also at this time that Abdullah Baidas, 23, who was driving a Chevrolet SUV, stopped to help and was out of his SUV and on the freeway. Then an Amazon tractor-trailer driven Cody Munson, 56, coming up on the scene swerved to avoid but ended up striking all of the vehicles involved and pinning both the driver of the Mazda and the passenger of the SUV and killing them instantly. Abdullah Baidas avoided being struck by the Amazon truck by jumping off of the overpass 10 to 15 feet where he suffered minor injuries authorities said. The 2 young children only suffered minor injuries due to being safely strapped into their car seats. The status of the Amazon driver, Mr. Munson; pickup driver, Mr. Vail; and SUV driver, Mr. Alvarado are unknown at this time.

ACCIDENT INJURY REPORT: Tractor-Trailer Caused Multiple-Car Wreck, Kills Motorcyclist

March 5, 2020: SAN ANTONIO – Police are searching for the driver of a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer that caused a multiple-car wreck, killing one motorcyclist, on Monday, March 2. The truck was traveling at a speed too fast for moderate-to-heavy traffic before it crashed into the back of the motorcyclist around 6:30 p.m. in the 8200 block of Interstate 10 East, police said.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the motorcyclist as 64-year-old Kyle Wayne Perry who died at the scene due to blunt force injuries. Three vehicles in front of Perry were also impacted in the wreck, causing a Jeep Cherokee to roll over, police said.

The truck, which had a flat-bed trailer attached to it, attempted to brake before impact and jack-knifed on the highway, blocking both eastbound lanes. The driver of the tractor-trailer fled the scene on foot and did not render aid, police said.

ACCIDENT INJURY REPORT – Spilled Cement Causes Accident, Kills 2 in Humble TX

(Humble Texas, Feb 16, 2020) A cement truck spilled its contents on a roadway Friday February 14, in Humble Texas causing an accident that killed two people. The truck belonging to Lattimore Materials was loosing wet cement on the pavement that caused a hazard on Old Humble Road about 5:30 in the morning. A northbound vehicle then slipped on the cement and slid into the southbound vehicle Both drivers of the passenger vehicles died at the scene, they were LaTanya Earl (49) and Seliz Palacios (19).

An investigation is ongoing as it is unsure at this time which passenger vehicle originally slipped in the wet cement. It is also noted that the Lattimore Materials truck may have been driving the wrong way on the road.

ACCIDENT INJURY REPORT: El Paso, Three Killed in Car Crashes

El PASO, TEXAS, January 17, 2020: Three people died in a three-vehicle crash Friday in Northeast El Paso during evening rush hour in the 4000 block of Hercules Avenue. El Paso Police said Billy Ray Ethridge Jr., 45, was in a 2016 Dodge Challenger traveling east at a high speed on Hercules.

Ahead of him traveling east on the same road was a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze driven by 23-year old Danny Parra with passengers Sergio Zarate, 23, and John Milam Jr., 25, of El Paso.
