VW Cheated Customers
Volkswagen (VW) has admitted to installing software intended to fool federal regulators on about 482,000 diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2009.

The device turned on vehicles’ full emission control systems during emissions tests, and then turned many of the controls off while the vehicle was in normal use. This allowed the vehicles to emit up to 40 times the legally allowed amount of nitrogen oxide, according to regulators.
VW may have installed the software to increase fuel economy or improve vehicle performance. The auto manufacturer announced it would stop selling vehicles with the kind of diesel engine that federal regulators flagged for allegedly containing the “defeat devices.”
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered a recall. The company could potentially face billions in fines, lawsuits, and recall costs.
