The cars' ignition switches have been switched out of the "run" position, and this prevented the airbags in the vehicles from deploying properly.

To date, a total of 303 deaths have been reported by GM, due to the fact that the airbags did not deploy properly to help minimize impact during collision. There may be many more deaths that GM has not accounted for. At this time, a total of over 1.6 million vehicles have been recalled, and countless other owners of these vehicles, are likely to be informed of the faulty switch in coming days, weeks, and months.
