What You Need to Know About the Graco Inclined Sleeper Product Recall

Inclined baby sleepers have been popular with parents for over a decade because of their nest-like comfort and soothing rocking motions. However, a 2019 investigation by Consumer Reports found that the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n’ Play, the first major inclined sleeper on the market, was linked to at least 32 infant deaths. The Rock ‘n’ Play and similar products have since incurred recalls for being too dangerous. Accordingly, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Graco recalled its inclined sleeper in 2020.

If an inclined sleeper hurt your child or caused their death, the infant injury attorneys at Carabin Shaw will file your claim. Our product liability lawyers know how to advocate for you and protect your rights against bad actors and negligent parties. Connect with us for a free case review.

The Dangers of Inclined Sleepers

What you need to know about the Graco inclined sleeper product recall starts with why these products are so dangerous. When infants turn three months old or exhibit rollover capabilities, inclined sleepers become suffocation hazards. Babies could roll themselves into a dangerous position on their stomach or side and have difficulty moving back. The resultant restricted airflow can cause brain damage or death.

Consumer Reports also found that some babies younger than this three-month threshold died in the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n’ Play. While some instances had additional factors—such as underlying medical conditions or extra bedding—dangerous product attorneys note that the number of incidents associated with inclined sleepers raises pressing safety concerns.

More generally, inclined sleepers go against safety guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). AAP recommends that:

  • All caregivers place infants wholly on their back for sleeping until they are one year of age.
  • Babies sleep on firm surfaces, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib. In other words, sofas, armchairs, and sitting devices are not safe sleeping places.
  • To reduce the risk of suffocation, entrapment, strangulation, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), babies should not sleep with loose bedding or other soft objects.
  • Parents should not restrict their baby’s movement during sleep and avoid products where their baby needs to be strapped in.

Product liability lawyers note that, by design, products like Graco’s inclined sleeper flout this established medical advice and promote hazardous sleeping habits. In fact, the lead medical consultant on early inclined sleeper models was neither a pediatrician nor a sleep specialist. The Rock ‘n’ Play, in particular, was negligently designed and later formed a template for similar products from brands like Graco.

If you believed the marketing claims that these products were safe, reach out to an attorney as soon as possible.

Graco’s Recalled Products

In January 2020, Graco and CPSC recalled the inclined sleeper accessories sold with the following sets:

  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Day2Dream Playard with Bedside Sleeper
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Nuzzle Nest Playard
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Everest Playard
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Rock ‘n Grow Playard

While there have been no reported infant fatalities or injuries associated with these products yet, Graco took them off the market per safety regulations. The company also urged users to stop using these items and request a recall kit. However, if you suspect that Graco’s products harmed your child, our dangerous product attorneys will offer support and guidance as they build a case.
