FDA Recall: Valsartan Linked to Kidney Cancer

Valsartan, a key ingredient to most blood pressure medications, has been recently recalled due to an impurity. The voluntary recall was lead by Chinese Pharmaceutical company, Zhejiang Huahi, the supplier of the ingredient. Valsartan has been linked to cancer, particularly of the kidney and liver. So far the drug has been recalled in 22 countries, according to CNN. If you are in the United States and have used Valsartan for at least six months to a year, and have faced negative consequences because of it, then you may be eligible to participate in a Valsartan recall lawsuit. To see if you are eligible, contact a US product liability lawyer at Carabin Shaw for a free initial consultation today.

What is Valsartan?

Valsartan is a common medication used to treat high blood pressure in the United States. When blood pressure is left untreated, it can cause damage to the brain, heart, and kidneys. Valsartan is an angiotensin ii receptor blocker (ARB). ARBs block a substance that causes heart vessels to tighten, thus relaxing blood vessels and therefore blood pressure. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a US recall in 2018.

Valsartan Risks and Side Effects

Valsartan has been recalled because of high levels of NDMA, or N-nitrosodimethylamine. NDMA is a human carcinogen, or cancer causing substance. Valsartan and kidney damage has been correlated as well as links of Valsartan and cancer in the US. Both side effects are extremely serious and harmful. Although the amount of Valsartan that causes these side effects is still unknown, if you have been taking Valsartan between 2014 to present between six months to a year, you may be able to form a case with a US lawyer.

Not every user will develop cancer or disease, but you may be curious--Valsartan and liver cancer: are you at risk? The Valsartan FDA recall was published in July of 2018, with a follow-up in November. A full list of recalled Valsartan products can be found on the FDA website. If you have been using Valsartan, contacting a US attorney will help you begin your case.

Valsartan, the Kidney, and the Liver

One of the chief complaints about Valsartan is its kidney side effects. The kidneys are integral to filtering the bloodstream. One main question surrounding the medication is: Does Valsartan cause kidney cancer? Studies are still being done to investigate the link between the drug and kidney problems. You may be at higher risk to develop kidney problems if you are diabetic, over the age of 60, or have a family history of kidney problems. Valsartan side effects for the kidney include possible kidney tumors or cancer.

The link of Valsartan and Cancer in the US, as well as other health issues, is being further investigated by the FDA. If Valsartan has caused health problems regarding the kidney or liver, contact a US lawyer at Carabin Shaw today. In addition to kidney problems, a large case has been brought targeting Valsartan’s link to liver cancer.

Valsartan and liver cancer: are you at risk? Consider these factors:

  • Age: Those over the age of 60 are more likely to form liver cancer
  • Gender: Men are more likely to develop liver cancer by a ratio of 2:1
  • Lifestyle: Those who use alcohol heavily and smoke may increase the risk of liver cancer.

Like the kidney, the liver helps filter out harmful substances and converts them to non-harmful substances. The liver is important to metabolic functions as well by converting nutrients into substances our bodies need. Valsartan cancer in the US primarily targets the liver and kidneys. If you believe to be at risk, talk to a doctor right away. Then, if you have been impacted by Valsartan, contacting a US lawyer will help you pursue a case.
