Many tire defects result from incorrect tire inflation or tread separation. Under such conditions tires with defects can cause a tire to blow out or a car/SUV/Light Truck to rollover, resulting in fatal or at least serious injuries. Per the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), faulty or defective tires cause at least 660 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each and every year. An immediate, thorough investigation and preservation of all possible evidence are the key factors when determining causation, or how and why an accident actually happened.

At Carabin Shaw, our legal team, including our Defective Tire Lawyers, fully understands how complex tire defect cases really are. When they investigate a serious truck accident, our defective tires lawyers and the rest of our legal team understand that these cases are complex and that these accidents frequently have a less obvious cause than simple driver error. Therefore we have an experienced group which digs deeper into the cause of vehicle accidents than your average car wreck lawyer. Our legal team includes the expert witnesses who know tires and know the particular tire companies and which mistakes they make. Carabin Shaw is ready to do battle for you and get you the best possible chance at the maximum recovery allowed by law. Tread separation is a leading cause of tire defect accidents.

Tread Separation

Tires are manufactured from different belts or plies, (also called layers) of different materials such as nylon, fiberglass, steel or other scientific materials that are, as part of the manufacturing process, exposed or baked to very high temperatures and high pressure so that they bond together into one continuous piece. When they are designed properly and manufactured correctly, these belts add stability and strength to tires. If the manufacturer uses the wrong, or too little, adhesive to attach the belt to the tread and to the remaining part of the tire, it can cause real problems. The adhesive can fail because it is inherently too weak or because of other manufacturing errors, the tread may not adhere properly to the belt, reducing the integrity of the tire. When this happens, cracks may form in the tire; tread separation occurs when the layers, or plies, of a tire separate from one another.

Incorrect Tire Inflation

Two of the most common causes of tire failure are over-inflation or under-inflation of automotive or light truck tires. Underinflated tires, while in hot weather or on highways, can cause the sidewalls to run very hot. The resulting buildup of heat can cause the treads separate or suffer a blowout suddenly. Overinflating tires, which frequently occurs when someone adds air to a tire until it “appears full.” This can be just as dangerous because it makes tires much more vulnerable to damage from curbs and potholes. These possible defects can cover up for actual design and manufacture problems. We know the difference.
